Petra Hendriks (Center for Language and Cognition, University of Groningen) and Martin Everaert will kick off the discussion by presenting their views on these and related matters.

A discussion on the future of linguistics in general, and linguistic research at the UIL OTS in particular.

The field of linguistics has changed dramatically in the past 40 years. Empirical expansion, theoretical diversification and methodological innovation have had an enormous impact on our understanding of all things linguistic, but have at the same resulted in a sense of fragmentation. Is there still a common core to the highly diverse research activities that are labeled ‘linguistic’? Are there still questions that every linguist considers quintessential? What are we to do to advance further, both theoretically and methodologically? How do we connect theory-driven and applied work, and in what ways can we be relevant to society?
